Languages and home page
German as default, English under /en/, the backend language and the site package with its language switch.
Languages
The site is bilingual, and German is the default:
| Language | languageId | URL | Locale |
|---|---|---|---|
| German (default) | 0 | / | de_DE.UTF-8 |
| English | 1 | /en/ | en_US.UTF-8 |
- English uses
fallbackType: strict. A page only appears under/en/once it is translated and the translation is visible. Content is translated in the Page module. - The entrypoint creates the languages during the first installation. In existing installations, maintain them in
config/sites/main/config.yamlin thetypo3-configvolume or in the backend under “Sites”. - The backend is German for new users, that is the setup admin and users created via Keycloak. Everyone can change the language in their user settings. The login page follows the browser language.
- The entrypoint downloads the German language pack once from the TYPO3 translation server into
var/labels/de.
docker compose exec -u www-data php vendor/bin/typo3 language:update de # update the language pack
Home page and site package
The frontend comes from packages/site_package (site set local/site-package): a header with website title, main navigation, search field and the DE | EN language switch at the top right, followed by an introduction, the content and a footer.
- The switch takes you to the translated page. If a page is not translated, it leads to the home page of the other language.
- The heading at the top is the page’s subtitle (otherwise its title), and the text below is its abstract.
- Content elements with the “Card” frame (tab Appearance) appear side by side as tiles on the home page.
- Pages in a section such as this manual show a section navigation on the left. The entry page of a section lists its subpages as cards.
- The website title is stored as
websiteTitlein the site configuration. During the first installation it comes fromTYPO3_PROJECT_NAME. - During the first installation,
typo3 site:setup-homepage,typo3 site:setup-docsandtypo3 site:setup-searchcreate the home page, this documentation and the search page in German and English. The commands change nothing once the content exists. typo3 site:setup-docs --updatebrings this documentation up to the state of the site package: sections with the same heading are overwritten, new pages and sections are added. Additional sections of your own are kept.- Templates live in
Resources/Private/Templates/, the CSS inResources/Public/Css/site.cssand the labels inResources/Private/Language/. Changes take effect after a rebuild.
